SUMMARY

Describes phonology, word classes, morphology, construction and sentence types, and noun and verb constructions of Sgaw Karen, noting that only one speaker was available for this part of the study. Compares Karen dialects: two varieties of Sgaw and Pho, one each from Moulmein and Bassein, and a variety of Karen spoken in Taungthu by Pa-O, following the theory of linguistic bifurcation. Contains an etymological glossary, listing forms in groups according to the reconstructed tone and subgrouped according to finals in order to show the interdependence of tone, initial consonant, and final consonant. Estimates that one and a half million Karens live in Burma, with small groups in Northern and Central Thailand. [TAIC]
