Outlines the theoretical background for study of a phonological system. Considers the seven basic Thai languages and lists the names and geographical location of the dialects studied. Describes the method used for comparing the modern dialects and gives phoneme correspondence charts for selected dialects of ancient Thai and Sanskrit. Discusses the phonology of ancient and modern Thai and the changes in phonemes that have occurred. Presents a theoretical genealogy of the modern Thai dialect and describes various dialect borrowings.
