This dissertation aims to study literary techniques of Yuan Phai Khlong Dan whose excellence and perfection have influenced Thai panegyric literature in later periods. The study found that the literary techniques of Yuan Phai Khlong Dan were excellent in both narration and aesthetics. In his narration, the poet intentionally expressed that he supported King Borommatrailokanat. His glorification of the king was delivered through various elements in the story. In effect, King Borommatrailokanat was portrayed as a perfect king with the emphasis on his heroic capability, intellect, and morality. In addition, the poet created the antagonist in order to praise the protagonist, the king, for his goodness. His mightiness was depicted in such scenes as the construction of Chiang Chuen City. The literary techniques also resulted in the poem’s literary aesthetics and its depth when the poet glorified the king, for example, in his comparison of the king’s well-rounded image as Deva Raja, Buddha Raja, and characters from other literary works. The use of the repetition of the same word in different positions in the poem and alliteration rendered the aesthetic sense of the poem and the emphasis on the poem’s meaning-making. With its outstanding literary techniques, Yuan Phai Khlong Dan became an exemplar for panegyric literature in later periods. Yuan Phai Khlong Dan was used as a model for other poets to create in their work, for example, various literary elements that praised the king’s characteristic, the narrative technique of continuous sequences of stories by the use of the word “thalaengpang” (แถลงปาง), and the use of figurative language in order to glorify the king. However, panegyric literature in later periods was different due to their different social contexts. For example, the image of the king seen in Yuan Phai Khlong Dan as Deva Raja became that of a righteous human being who worked hard for his people in present-day panegyric literature. The king who knew the past and the future and who could read other’s mind was transformed into the king whose intellect was a result of his study of all kinds of knowledge.
