The team of architects that won the design contest for the new Parliament in 2009 utilized the “Trai Phum Concept,” describing the most important philosophical aspects of Buddhism. This concept was translated into an architectural design concept known as Sappaya-Sapastan. This architectural design concept tries to convey elements of traditional Thai architecture. With the introduction of Sappaya-Sapastan, the new Parliament building can enliven the spiritual bond of the Thai people, and help them overcome moral crisis. The symbolism of the Trai Phum Concept was determined at the beginning of the Sappaya-Sapastan design and was applied in every step of the process. The architects of this team had integrated the concepts of the venerable literature of Trai Phum into the construction technology, and taken the social structure and the constitutional monarchy into consideration as well. The architects have tried to merge the core values of Buddhism reflected in Trai Phum with the principles of democracy in an effort to showcase the foundation for peace in this country. The symbolism in the architectural design of Sappaya-Sapastan embodied by the physical characteristics of the new Parliament building is remarkable and readily understood. However, whether its true architectural values and intended significance are really appreciated depends on the response of the public.
