SUMMARY

This book is a study of how particular structures can assume a variety of cultural interpretations and how different structures can be represented by the same set of cultural symbols. Leach found that the population of the Kachin Hills Area is not culturally uniform. But as concerns these ritual aspects of culture, the population of the Kachin Hills Area is relatively uniform. Ritual acts are ways of "saying things" about social status, and the "language" in which these things are said is common to the whole Kachin Hills Area
