The purposes of this study are 1) to subcategorize the meanings of /?au/ 'take' 2) to analyze the characteristics both semantically and syntactically 3) to study the relationship between those meaning and 4) to explain the cognitive processes for meaning extension in this word. This study is based on the cognitive semantic approach. The researcher used the theory of Principled Polysemy as criteria for meaning sub-categorization and used the theory of Four Categories of Polysemy in order to analyzing the process of meaning extensions. The results are that /?au/ 'take' can be divided into 3 types of meaning; 1) lexical meaning 2) grammatical meaning and 3) pragmatic meaning. All of them are further divided into 9 meanings; 1)to possess the target object 2) to want 3) to have a sex relation 4) to consider something to be another thing 5) causative 6) to choose intentionally 7) to be a victim of action 8) to intro into a conversation and 9) to cut off a conversation. The meaning of /?au/ 'take' are related to one another radially to form a network. Meaning 1) is considered to be a central meaning occuring to be center of the network. Every meaning is extended from central meaning except only meaning 6) that is extended from meaning 2). The meaning extension consists of 2 types of cognitive processes which are metonymy and grammaticalization. Metonymy used in this particular network can be divided into 3 sub-types: effect metonymy, contextual metonymy and constituent metonymy. Grammaticalization causes /?au/ 'take' to change its status from verb into particle and discourse marker.
