The hypothesis of this study is that there is a linkage between Hans Morgenthau’s works on international theory and the following works on U.S. foreign policy. Therefore, a study of Morgenthau’s works on U.S. foreign policy should offer a better understanding and clarification to the difficulties inherent in Morgenthau’s works on international theory. This study, hence, concentrates on Hans Morgenthau’s works on U.S. foreign policy. The objectives of this study are: 1) to clarify Morgenthau’s central ideas, concepts and theory of Realism which are often misunderstood and criticized; 2) to trace the development of Morgenthau’s thoughts since 1950. The finding is that there is clearly a linkage between Hans Morgenthau’s works on international theory and works on U.S. foreign policy. The study found that in his U.S. foreign policy works, Morgenthau responded to his critics and elaborated on his concepts and theory presented in his earlier works. He also demonstrated the application of his theory of Realism to analyze contemporary international events. Consequently, a study of Morgenthau’s works on U.S. foreign policy do provide a clarification to his main concepts including human reason, power, national interest and morality which enhances our understanding of his thoughts. At the same time, this study also allows us to see Morgenthau’s reaction to new international conditions in the post-World War II era.
