เจ้าเมืองนครศรีธรรมราชสมัยการปกครองแบบเก่า แห่งกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ (พ.ศ. 2325 - พ.ศ. 2435) / อรียา เสถียรสุต = The governorship of ligor under the old system of government of the Bangkok period (A.D. 1782-1892) / Areeya Sathirasuda
This research is an attempt to make a detailed study of Nakhon Sritammarat (known to foreigners as Ligor) and its governors from the beginning of the Bangkok Period to the reforms in the reign of King Chulalongkorn. This thesis is devided into 7 chapters. The introductory chapter is a survey of the problem, the aims, the scope and the method of research of this thesis. The second chapter deals with the general background of Nakhon Sritammarat and its history in each period. The third chapter presents Nakhon Sritammarat at the end of the Ahyudaya Period and during the Thonburi Period. In the reign of King Rama I, Nakhon Sritammarat, raised a vassal state by King Taksin, was reduced to a first class province. The fourth chapter is concerned with internal and external events, namely, the Thai occupation of Kedah in 1821 and the relationship between England and Thailand. It is noted that the situation in Kedah and the Anglo-Burmese War were instrumental in arousing the interest of England in sending envoys to Thailand. Chapter V is related to chapter IV and describes the negociations between Thailand and England. Chao Phrya Nakhon Sritammarat (Noi) participated in the negociations with Henry Burney and signed the Preliminary Treaty in 1825. When the relatives of the Sultan of Kedah revolted against Thailand in 1830 and l837, Chao Phrya Nakhon Sritammarat took part in pacifying these two revolutions. His attempt to extend his control over the Malay Tributary States is shown. The rivalry, jealiousy and resentment between Nakhon Sritammarat and Songkla led to the lack of cooperation between these two main provincial centres over the Southern areas. The sixth chapter introduced the new governor, Chao Phrya Nakhon Sritammarat (Noi Klang), the dispute in Kedah and the war in Pahang. The last chapter is about Nakhon Sritam-marat before and after the reforms. Phrya Nakhon Sritammarat (Nhu Prom) was summoned to Bangkok and Pra Vichitrvarasat was appointed special-inspector and later resident commissioner in Monthol Nakhon Sritammarat. The administration, economy and judiciary of this province were greatly improved during the time of the Thesaphibal system of provincial administration. The thesis concludes with the writer's point of view about the administration, the foreign affairs, the governorship of Nakhon Sritammarat and the lack of cooperation and rivalry between Songkla and Nakhon Sritammarat. The writer suggests that the detailed study of the role of Chad Phrya Nakhon (Noi) in foreign affairs, if primary and secondary sources in other European languages could be found and utilized, would be more significant and interesting.
