SUMMARY
ABSTRACT : For a number of years Chulalongkorn University Language Institute has treated Listening and Speaking as two separate courses : the listening course admintistered in language laboratories is self-instructional; speaking courses, by contrast, are taught in a regular classroom situation. The recent trend towards teaching languages for communicative purposes emphasizes a new aspect of teaching : the integration of skills. A number of teachers, having questioned whether or not students really achieve more through skill integration than through separate skill courses, prepared a set of listening - speaking integrated units and started this experimental research project. Their purpose was to teach those materials through different listening speaking combinations, in order to study, the effects of each combination and to find out which combination would yield the best results. The sample poulation consisted of 25 groups of first year Chulalongkorn University students. They were simple stratified randomly selected : five from each of five faculties, namely Engineering, Pharmaceutical Science, Communication Arts, Commerce and Accountancy and Arts. These faculties represent four major academic areas : Physiological Sciences, Biological Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities. Each of the five groups from each faculty was taught a different program - the five alternatives are given below. The matching of groups to the program models was done by drawing lots. Each program model consisted of 2 spearate class hours per week.
