Consists of sixteen papers presented at the Annual Meeting of the Society. Defines concept of "the tribe", explores linguistic and communications problems in defining "tribe". Mathematical structures in ethnological systems and the "cultunit" are briefly explained. Religious symbolism and ethnic awareness are discussed, specifically in regard to the Chinese. The Thai Lue are discussed in two papers, describing this group in some detail. Subjects included are political evolution of the tribe, the tribe, the tribe as a socio-political unit, law and the tribe, the problem of the tribe in contemporary sociopolitical contexts, ethnic identification, and development of nationalism.
