Presents Buddhism, education and politics in Burma and Thailand from the Seventeenth century to the present. Studies the education of the Sangha under strong Monarchs (1629-1878) and a threatened Buddhist kingdom and a nationalist Sangha (1853-1878) in Burma. Explains political instability and the Sangha and the standardization of monastic education, and national integration under King Chulalongkorn (1868-1910). Presents dilemmas in the current monastic education systems of Burma and Thailand.
