Purposes of the study : 1. To study the administrative task of the academic department in the faculties of education under the Office of University Affairs in Bangkok Metropolis. The study is concentrated in 4 areas as follows :1.1 Instruction 1.2 Research 1.3 Academic services to the public 1.4 Cultural promotion and transmission 2. To compare the administrators’ and instructors’ opinions about the administrative areas of the academic department. Research Procedure : Samples used in the research were 35 department heads and 335 instructors in the faculties of education from 6 universities in Bangkok Metropolis. Three hundred seventy questionnaires were distributed to the samples. Two hundred and fourty one questionnaires or 65.14 percent were completed and returned. The questionnaires used in this study was consists of three parts. They were respondents personal information, department administration and qualification for chairman of the department. Percentage, mean , standard deviation and t-test were used to analyze the data. Findings : 1. Personal Information :The respondents were mostly female, age between 31 to 35 , held the academic position as instructors, and Master Degree graduated. 2. Department Administration : 2.1 Instruction : Course assignment according to the capability and interest of the individual instructor, Right and freedom in course evaluation were practiced mostly. On the contrary, examination for recruitment was lessly practiced. 2.2 Research : Loaded teaching task and lack of supporting budgets were the main problems in research capability of the department. 2.3 Academic services to the public : Lack of proper procedure for public services permission to the teaching staff and lack of public evaluation for the program. In service training, both short and long range programs were also provided lessly. 2.4 Cultural promotion and transmission : Cultural promotion and transmission were lessly supported both by the department and the curriculum itself. Activities, pertraining to this certain area, were also lessly provided. 3. By the testing of statistical difference, it was found that the opinions of the department heads and the instructors were significantly different in all the four administrative areas. 4. Qualification for chairman of the department : Chairman of the Department should be either male or female ; have at least 5 years of experience and stay in position for 2 years in each period.
