The uniqueness of the Thailand Information Center or TIC stems chiefly from its Charter having initially excluded the acquisition of such standard library type materials as text-books, atlases, and journal issues, as well as from the fact that it was designed to provide information on an entire country, with particular emphasis on information focusing on the behavioural and social sciences and related disciplines.

The TIC acquires abstracts and indexes, and stores documents and research results relating to these areas, particularly those research works done in or concerning Thailand. The coverage originally specified for the TIC has been interpreted liberally to permit the inclusion of documents which contain similar information on neighbouring Southeast Asian countries and on other countries which have social, economic, security and development conditions comparable to those in Thailand.
